Insuring a Campervan
If you want to insure your camper van, you are going to have to look at the recreational vehicle section of the website or catalog of the insurer because a camper van is labeled as a type B RV or recreational vehicle. Insuring a camper van is no different from insuring a car. There are just a few more insurance options to consider.
Here is an overview of the insurance options that you’re going to have to look at when insuring your camper van…
Liability insurance- This coverage protects you indirectly by paying for damages, for which you are responsible for in an accident, which was your fault. This insurance is required in every single state except New Hampshire and Wisconsin.
Liability insurance is divided into two parts, bodily injury liability and property damage liability. Property damage coverage pays for damage to other automobiles and things such as fences, and bodily injury pays medical bills.
Collision coverage- This pays for the repair costs of the camper van involved in an accident whether you are the guilty party or not. It is almost always required if you finance the van because the van isn’t really yours until you pay it all off.
GAP- Another name for Guaranteed Auto Protection, which will pay the difference between how much you owe in financing fees and how much the van insurance provider will pay you.
Personal Injury Protection- Very similar to health insurance coverage.
Uninsured/underinsured- If you get into an accident and the other motorist was at fault, their liability insurance should pay your damages. This coverage protects you if their coverage is not enough.
Here are some insurance options that are commonly given out specifically to camper vans or RVs…
Personal belongings insurance- Your camper van is very much like your own home, with your personal property in it. Make sure that they are insured by your homeowners insurance.
Total Replacement Coverage- This will pay for the cost to get you a completely new van if your RV is irreparable after an accident.
Emergency Expense RV Coverage- This would pay for the hotel and transportation costs if your campervan needs time in the repair shop.
Vacation Liability Insurance Coverage- This type of coverage pays for damages for which you are liable for at a vacation site.
