Fundraising With Purpose

16 September 2009 No Comment

Getting involved with fundraising activities requires that you do a few things to make sure everyone is committed to reaching your financial goals and that everything is done right. Often it is the start-up phases that are the most difficult, but if you follow some simple steps you can get the fundraiser off the ground and experience real success.

The first thing you need to do is look at any activities you may have participated in and break it down into what worked well and what didn’t. This information is the perfect way to start your fundraising activities right. However, if you don’t have any experience in this area, you should consider researching the field from others who have gone before you.

Next, decide on your budget and your goals and set them in stone. Fundraising activities that don’t have clear goals are doomed to fail. You have to know what you are aiming for and you have to know what you have to work with if you want to have any chance of success. Do everything you can to reach those goals.

Everything, that is, except go over your budget. After all, the idea is to make money, and you don’t want to wind up further in debt than when you started. Always be strict about following your budget.

This is the time to decide exactly what kind of fundraising activities you are capable of doing well. Do you want to hold an auction or raffle? Or would you rather opt for the classic car wash? There are countless things you could do to raise some money, from selling lollipops and chocolate bars to holding gold parties and fancy dinners. Consider your resources and choose your activities accordingly.

Finally, if you are in a leadership position, take it very seriously. Fundraising activities rely on their volunteers to succeed. You will have to give them the motivation, encouragement and direction they need to accomplish their tasks.

When you can unify your entire staff they will all feel like they are active participants in reaching your goals. They will feel appreciated and be more likely to continue working for you. Fundraising activities can live or die by their volunteers. Make sure yours will keep you going.

It really doesn’t have to be that hard to manage your fundraising activities. Just like any other management situation, you have to set goals, develop your staff, and reward quality performance. Good preparation and follow-through will help you run a successful campaign.
